Weather
for Gardeners
If you are interested in gardening, then you are probably interested,
at least somewhat, in the weather. Understanding a few weather basics
you might encounter while gardening, and how to keep track of the
weather, can make your gardening more fun.
Vegetable
Garden Chats
In May gardening begins in earnest. April weather is too uncertain
for many vegetables to be planted in the open and even early May
cannot be trusted far. By the end of the month, however, practically
the first planting of everything we wish to include in our program
is in the ground.
Cultivating
and Weeding the Garden Without Chemicals
Cultivating and weeding are unpleasant tasks for most gardeners.
We love the beautiful flowers and the fresh vegetables, the "end
result." First, the architect of the garden must consider the
basics of abolishing those annoying weeds.
Tips
for Terrific Tomatoes
Tomatoes are grown by more gardeners than any other plant. Anyone
who has compared the flavor of a good home-grown tomato to most
store-bought ones knows why.
Growing tomatoes is not difficult, but they are vulnerable to several
diseases — and cool, moist summers west of the Cascades and
in coastal northern California can pose special challenges.
Organic
Gardening Tips
Mulch your flower beds and trees with 3" of organic material
- it conserves water, adds humus and nutrients, and discourages
weeds. It gives your beds a nice, finished appearance.
Japanese
garden
Japanese gardens (Kanji, nihon teien) in the tradition of Japan
can be found at private homes, in neighborhood or city parks, at
Buddhist temples or Shinto shrines, and at historical landmarks
such as old castles. Many of the Japanese gardens most famous in
the West, and within Japan as well, are Zen gardens.
